Tamil is a prominent Dravidian language spoken predominantly by people in India and Sri Lanka. As an official language in India, Sri Lanka, and Singapore, and a recognized classical language, it connects over 75 million native speakers globally.
The Diploma in Tamil, offered by the Department of Linguistics at the University of Kelaniya, is designed to build high-level communication competence and cultural understanding. This program plays a vital role in promoting harmonious coexistence among the diverse ethnic groups of Sri Lanka by bridging linguistic gaps.

| Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will achieve proficiency in speaking, writing, and comprehending Tamil, alongside the ability to translate the language and engage deeply with Tamil culture.
The Diploma in Tamil (DTML) is meticulously designed to provide a well-rounded linguistic and cultural education. The curriculum is divided into five specialized modules, each carrying 6 credits, totaling a comprehensive 30-credit program. These modules transition from foundational speaking and writing skills to specialized professional applications and an exploration of Tamil heritage.
| Entry Requirements
To be eligible for admission to the Diploma in Tamil, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Successful completion of the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination with passes in three (03) subjects in any stream, or
Any other qualification or professional experience recognized by the Senate of the University of Kelaniya as equivalent to the above, or
Applicants must be native Sinhala speakers (Sinhala as a mother tongue).
The program maintains high academic standards through a comprehensive evaluation process:
Final Examination: Students must complete five 3-hour written papers covering course units DTML 13016, DTML 13026, DTML 13036, DTML 13046, and DTML 13056 at the end of the program.
Continuous Assessment: Final scores include a 20-mark mid-year evaluation for DTML 13016 and a 30-mark oral examination for DTML 13046.
