The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a research-intensive degree (SLQF Level 11) conducted in coordination with the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS), designed to develop a scholar’s capacity for conducting independent, original research. This program requires candidates to make a significant contribution to their chosen discipline under the guidance of expert supervisors.
Candidates may pursue research in the following areas:
Linguistics
Translation Studies
Tamil as a Second Language
Depending on the research focus, candidates will be assigned qualified supervisors from the Department of Linguistics or, where necessary, co-supervisors from related disciplines.
The MPhil is primarily a research-oriented programme. Candidates are required to conduct independent research under academic supervision and submit a thesis at the end of the programme. The thesis and dissertation are considered interchangeable terms at the University of Kelaniya.
To be eligible for admission to the MPhil program, applicants must generally meet one of the following requirements:
Bachelor’s Honours Degree: A Bachelor’s Honours degree (SLQF Level 6) in a relevant field with a First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) from a recognized university.
Master’s Degree: A Master’s degree in a relevant field with a significant research component (SLQF Level 10) from a recognized university.
Other Qualifications: Any other academic or professional qualification equivalent to the above, as accepted by the Senate of the University of Kelaniya.
Applicants are required to submit an application along with a research proposal to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The proposal will be reviewed by the Board of Study in Humanities and the Department of Linguistics.
The selection process includes:
Evaluation of research proposal
Proposal presentation before a panel of senior academics
Appointment of supervisor(s)
Approval by the Board of Study
Once accepted, the applicant becomes an MPhil candidate after completing registration and payment of relevant fees.
Official Duration: 2 Years
Maximum Extension: 2 Years
Maximum Re-registration: 1 Year
Maximum Total Duration: 5 Years
Candidates are required to complete the following:
Approval of research proposal
Ethical clearance (where applicable)
Submission of four progress reports (every six months)
Two progress presentations
Participation in skills development programmes conducted by FGS
Publication of one full research paper in a recognized journal or the FGS Journal (applicable for students registered after 01.01.2023)
Submission of thesis
Viva voce examination
